Biological Data Analysis and Visualization Projects

The first project shown is Arbor, funded by the National Science Foundation, KnowledgeVis led the software development of a web-based workflow system to process and visualize phylogenetic tree and character matrix data. Arbor can chain Python and R methods together in arbitrary workflows and save the workflows and datasets in access controlled storage to enable remote teams to collaborate over their shared data and methods. Several domain-specific visualization apps were developed for Arbor, including PhyloMap, which provides for interactive exploration of a coupled tree and character matrix along with locations of sitings of individual plants or animals corresponding to a taxon in the associated phylogenetic tree. The example below is for the flowering plant calachortus and its locations in Western United States. The next example focuses on visualizing sensor data for plant traits -- traits which were collected by the TERRA-REF project over several years in Mericopa, AZ. KnowledgeVis created interactive heatmap visualizations allowing the user to explore the development of measurments of Sorghum recorded during several growing seasons.
